The
Fortress Came First by T.J. Finlayson This book is indeed a tribute to the people of Gibraltar, documenting the hardships endured and the role played by the Rock and its population during World War II. It follows the lives of the Gibraltarian microcultures as evacuations meant the displacement of the Rocks' residents to countries with unfamiliar cultures, such as Morocco, Jamaica and the United Kingdom. The author tells how Gibraltarians had to adapt to the new climates and languages, the effect this had on them and their new neighbours and how their experiences abroad has influenced post war Gibraltar. A minor critique would be that Finlayson occasionally lapses into a pedantic narrative, detailing every last point rather than allowing the reader to immerse themselves fully in the emotions of the story. Despite this shortcoming, Finlayson has provided in this book a wonderful read, allowing Gibraltarians to gain a deeper understanding of the history of their people, and to carry this knowledge and strength onwards into the future.
