Sir John Chapple and Sir Francis Richards

26 September 2007 at The Gibraltar Government Offices, London. Sir John Chapple handing over the Chairmanship of The Friends of Gibraltar Heritage Society to Sir Francis Richards. Sir John has served as Chairman for 3 years.

The Friends of Gibraltar Heritage Society is an organisation dedicated to preserving the historical sites and monuments that form part of Gibraltar's varied history, and remind us of who we are and where we came from. These monuments also form an important part of the tourist experience, and, as such, make an important contribution to our economy. FOGHS works with the Gibraltar Heritage Trust, who co-ordinate work in Gibraltar. The Friends have a secondary role in bringing Gibraltarians together for a common cause from all over the UK and elsewhere.

Trafalgar Bicentenary websites:

We organise meetings in the UK, trips to Gibraltar and fundraisers. Non-Gibraltarians are welcome, and find it an excellent opportunity to meet real Gibraltarians and find out about this very British part of continental Europe.

Aims of the Society

1. To promote and maintain awareness in Gibraltar and the United Kingdom of the importance of the Rock's unique heritage and the benefits that will follow from its conservation and preservation.

2. To support the Gibraltar Heritage trust with fund raising and technical advice from the United Kingdom for its major heritage projects.

3. To support projects put forward by other bodies provided that they are acceptable to the Trust and the Gibraltar Heritage Society.

About the Society

Membership subscriptions are £15 per year, which is the major contribution to our funds.  The rest comes from social events, where entry fees and raffle tickets not only pay for the events, but contribute to our general funds.

All monies collected by the Society, unless otherwise specified by the donor, are put into our General Fund to be used for the preservation of Gibraltar's historical sites and monuments.  Details are on our Projects page.

We also publish a very interesting Newsletter, which is distributed free of charge to members.  All members are invited to contribute articles to the Newsletter on matters of common interest.  Contact with details.

All Committee Members of the FOGHS work on a voluntary basis and no travel expenses are reimbursed.  Committee members must also be fully paid up members of the Society and pay to attend all Society functions as would any other member.
